The Brief: Shade That Performs and Belongs
The challenge on a site like Al Maryah Island is not just engineering a shade structure that blocks the sun. It is creating a structure that fits — visually and technically — into a premium waterfront setting where international hotel brands, luxury retail, and year-round events create exacting standards for every element of the public realm.
Gebal Group’s shade structures at Al Maryah Island were designed to meet both requirements. HDPE fabric was selected for UV resistance, colour stability, and long-term tensile performance in Abu Dhabi’s climate. Frame structures were fabricated from hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated steel, specified for coastal conditions where salt air accelerates corrosion in standard mild steel.
Engineering for the UAE Environment
Abu Dhabi’s outdoor conditions are demanding for any shade structure. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Humidity, particularly from June through September, creates conditions that compromise poorly specified fabric and fixings over time. Wind loading requirements for tensile structures in the emirate are non-trivial, particularly in waterfront sites exposed to Gulf breezes.
Every Gebal shade structure is engineered to account for these site-specific factors. Load calculations, anchoring specifications, and fabric selection are all done in-house, with no reliance on generic templates from cooler climates. All structures are installed and certified in line with Gebal’s
ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications.
Shade as Part of the Outdoor Experience
At Al Maryah Island, shade structures are not an afterthought. They are an active part of what makes the boardwalk and outdoor public areas usable across the full year — extending the period when residents and visitors can comfortably spend time outdoors beyond the narrow winter window that would otherwise apply.
The installation covers key seating and gathering zones along the waterfront, ensuring that the areas between destinations are as comfortable as the destinations themselves. Shade over pedestrian pathways, rest nodes, and outdoor dining adjacencies transforms the boardwalk from a transit corridor into a place people actually spend time.
Gebal Group’s Shade Structure Capability
Al Maryah Island is one of a number of premium-site shade installations delivered by Gebal Group across the UAE and wider GCC. As a
shade structure specialist across Abu Dhabi, Gebal manages the full scope: concept design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and aftercare — all under one roof.
Gebal Group’s aftercare programme ensures all shade structures are maintained under a scheduled inspection regime — fabric checks, fixing audits, and responsive maintenance — so every installation performs at the same standard in year five as it did on day one. See the
Gebal service locations page for a full overview of completed projects across the UAE, KSA, and wider GCC.
