A Park That Reflects Its Environment
What distinguishes Sands Sports Park from a standard recreation facility is its relationship with its setting. The sand dunes are not a backdrop — they are integral to the park’s design and experience. Trails for cycling, running, hiking, and horse riding wind through the dunes, with facilities and rest areas integrated into the terrain rather than imposed on top of it.
The architectural design draws on the Najdi Rose and traditional Saudi design elements, grounding the project in local cultural identity while supporting the goals of modern urban development. Over 350,000 square metres of sand dunes were rehabilitated as part of the project’s sustainability commitment, preserving the natural ecosystem while creating world-class recreation infrastructure.
What Gebal Group Delivered
Gebal Group’s scope at Sands Sports Park included outdoor recreation and fitness infrastructure integrated into the park’s broader trail and activity zones, shade structures over key rest areas and seating nodes, street furniture and wayfinding elements designed to complement the park’s natural aesthetic, and rubber and hard-surface treatments in activity zones requiring impact absorption and durability.
Every element was specified for the Riyadh environment: extreme summer temperatures, sand ingress, UV degradation, and the demands of a high-use public facility that operates at scale. All materials and processes align with Gebal’s
ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 45001 Safety certifications.
Contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 Landscape
Sands Sports Park is more than a recreation facility. It is part of Riyadh’s broader transformation under
Vision 2030 — a city actively reshaping itself as a global hub for sports, tourism, and quality of life. The park is equipped to host cycling competitions and endurance races, and has already attracted international attention as an example of what large-scale outdoor recreation infrastructure can look like in a desert environment.
As part of the Sports Boulevard initiative, it significantly enhances Saudi Arabia’s network of sports and entertainment venues while reflecting cultural identity and protecting the environment. Gebal Group’s contribution to Sands Sports Park is part of its growing cross-border presence across the KSA and wider GCC.
